Scholarships + Awards

Each year, the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Faculty of Law awards more than $1.5 million in scholarships, bursaries and prizes to incoming and current Juris Doctor students. Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, this funding makes a significant, meaningful difference in the lives and studies of our students, and ensures that they continue the faculty’s history of scholarship, community building and excellence in the field of law. Applicants receive awards based on academic excellence, financial need, course performance, leadership and community service, among other criteria.

Juris Doctor (JD) Students
Incoming First-Year Students
All incoming first-year students are automatically considered for merit scholarships, based on their academic record prior to law school. No application is needed.
For all awards which have a financial-need component, it is expected that students have also applied for a . Payments are not required and interest does not accrue until you graduate. Additionally, all students who apply to the JD program are encouraged to complete the professional entrance and transfer scholarships application. This application opens Feb. 1 and closes March 31 each year. Completing this one application allows students to be considered for U of A awards, for awards specific to the Faculty of Law and for various government-funded awards.
Upper-year Students
Upper-year students are automatically considered for merit scholarships, based on their academic record in first or second year of law school.
Upper-year students are also encouraged to complete the undergraduate and graduating awards application, which opens Feb. 1 and closes March 31 each year. Completing this one application allows students to be considered for U of A awards, for awards specific to the Faculty of Law and for various government-funded awards.
Transfer Students
Transfer applicants who receive an offer of admission will be eligible to apply for bursaries in the fall when they commence attendance, and will be eligible to apply for awards based on academic performance and other criteria after completing their second year at the U of A Faculty of Law.
Graduate Students
Apply for awards through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
Bursaries for all students
Faculty of Law Bursaries
Through financial assistance funding, the Faculty of Law awards students up to 20 per cent of the differential fees it collects. These bursaries are included in the U of A Supplementary Bursary application. We encourage students to apply each fall.
Emergency Bursary
Students who are in severe financial need and who have exhausted all other sources of funding can apply to be considered for a Faculty of Law Emergency Bursary. Consideration will be based on receipt of a personal statement describing financial circumstances and attaching a detailed budget.
