Clinical Faculty
Thousands of Clinical Faculty members make up the largest body of teachers in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD) at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (UofA). We support the FoMD’s academic mission in classrooms, wards, clinics and laboratories across ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. We comprise over 75% of the educators in the FoMD, providing instruction to hundreds of students, residents and fellows across all the areas of medicine in urban and rural settings. Most are volunteer educators, maintaining a busy practice while providing education and mentorship to training the next generation of healthcare providers.
Many of the health care leaders in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ are U of A Clinical Faculty members innovating and transforming health care delivery, guiding the system and ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ns through multiple health care challenges.
Obtaining a Clinical Faculty Appointment
Any individual providing clinical teaching to students, residents or fellows in the FoMD is eligible for a CLINICAL FACULTY APPOINTMENT. The process is initiated by a written request to the Chair of the clinical department to which the individual belongs. Each department has established processes and timelines for submission. Consult your department administrator or Chair.
Some individuals may provide clinical services in more than one department; their primary appointment would be in the department in which they perform the majority of their clinical service, with the possibility of obtaining an adjunct appointment in other departments.
The Chair will submit a request for Clinical Faculty Appointment to the Office of Faculty Affairs. The Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs will review and process the request and recommend an appointment to the appropriate rank. This recommendation is then forwarded to the Dean for final approval and signature. Please note that this process can take weeks to months to complete. Consult your department Chair early as soon as you are recruited for a clinical position.
