Program Objectives

In this program, you will:

  1. Cultivate advanced performance skills on a chosen instrument, demonstrating both artistic and technical mastery.
  2. Investigate historical and current pedagogical practices and philosophies of music education within classroom, studio, and community music-making contexts.
  3. Develop a critical awareness of the Western musical traditions within diverse global and cultural contexts, while gaining a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of music, health, and wellbeing.

AUMUS 225 - Classical Era to Present Day (Music History)

Study of Western European art music from the mid-18th century to the 20th century, in the context of general cultural history.

AUMUS 235 - Conducting

Fundamental conducting techniques as applied to instrumental and vocal music.

AUMUS 250 - Music Education

A foundational course in the theory and practice of teaching music from pre-K to 6. Special emphasis on classroom observation and practical experience with the use of age-appropriate techniques, strategies and materials.

AUMUS 356 - Music and Wellness

A survey course designed to explore the range of benefits that music can offer to the community as related to health and wellness.

AUMUS 369 - Popular Music

Critical examination of popular music, with a focus on analytical paradigms and methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to interpretation.
