Convocation ‘25: Susan Sun, BSc/BEd

Shirley Wilfong-Pritchard - 29 May 2025

With a long-held passion for mathematics, physics and teaching, Susan is graduating with a combined bachelor of science and bachelor of education degree. While at Augustana, she served as a math mentor, where she found great satisfaction in assisting local high school students and her peers in navigating challenging mathematical concepts. This role taught her how to build students’ confidence and sustain their motivation — valuable skills to cultivate for her future role as a teacher.

We caught up with Susan to learn more about her time at Augustana and what she plans to do next.

Congratulations, Susan!

What led you to choose your current area of study, and why the U of A Augustana for your studies?

I’ve always had a passion for math, physics and teaching. Augustana offered the program just for me. The combined program allowed me to enjoy the benefits of a smaller campus, with smaller class sizes, more cohesive and focused courses, and high-quality education.

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at Augustana?

My favourite memory from my time at Augustana was working at the observatory, using the camera and telescope to take deep sky images as part of my directed study with associate professor . I got to stay up late to look at the stars; nothing gets better than that!

Tell us about your favourite professor/lecturer and/or class.

My favourite classes I took at Augustana were the studio arts classes. It was really fun spending time in the art studios drawing and talking to my friends. I got to know a lot of amazing artists from those classes. I learned to take creative risks and embrace mistakes/accidents in those classes.

Did you take on any leadership roles while you were a student, either on campus or in the Camrose community?

I was a math mentor during my time at Augustana. I was able to help local high school students and peers with math problems/concepts they were struggling with. I learned how to help students build confidence in their math skills and help them stay motivated. It was a rewarding role, and I am really glad to be able to see some students' academic growth over time.

How did you get where you are today?

It is my passion for math, physics and teaching. I am driven by my passion and try to embrace the present and enjoy every step of the journey to where I am today.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Work hard and have fun!

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

Spending time with family and friends.

What's next after graduation?

I will continue my passion for teaching and become a teacher.
