Masters (MSc) Periodontology
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal diseases and the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation.
The thesis-based Masters (MSc) Periodontology program will provide extensive, cutting-edge, top-of-the-line training in these areas. Emphasis will be placed on the classic and the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, as well as on training in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Residents will treat complex and advanced periodontal cases, including patients with a complex medical history. In addition, the residents will be specially trained in the placement and repair of dental implants and bone-related surgeries.
Students in this program will be provided with the necessary knowledge to challenge the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) Fellowship national specialty examination as well as the American Board of Periodontology exam.

The minimum time required to complete the MSc is three years. The maximum time permitted to complete the program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is four years. Students are required to reside in Edmonton for the entirety of their Clinical program.
Clinical Assessment
Oral assessments are completed during the clinical training. Full- and part-time academic faculty will assess diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment skills. Feedback from this assessment will serve to identify weak areas in the student's progress that will permit the development of specific improvement objectives before the next oral assessment. Failure to overcome the limitations will require the student to extend their program or may imply a failing grade in the clinical course(s).
An Education and Research license is required from the College of Dental Surgeons of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (CDSA) for the duration of the program. This documentation is due prior to starting the program in the fall term. Candidates who already possess a full license from the CDSA do not need to obtain additional licensure.

Students are required to complete research, usually within the established research focus of the program, and to complete a paper format thesis. Students should have their research results ready to submit to peer-reviewed journals for publication. It is anticipated that all student research projects will result in publication. Students may also have an opportunity to present their research results at an international scientific meeting prior to completion of the program.
