Continuing education for registered dental hygienists (RDHs) and registered dental assistants (RDAs) in Edmonton, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥

Gain competency in orthodontics.  This two-part module combines a theory exam with a hands-on portion. After passing the components, you can apply to your regulatory body to practice orthodontics in a clinical setting.

What you will learn

This module is designed to provide RDHs and RDAs with the tools necessary to support orthodontic procedures and pursue new career opportunities like working in an orthodontic clinic.

This module includes two courses that can be purchased individually: a theory component and a clinical component.

Theory component

$250 | Online | Unlimited capacity

The orthodontic theory component is a guided, self-study course administered through eClass. It’s recommended that you take at least three months before your desired exam date to complete the theory component and written exam.

Clinical Component

$1,250 | Hands-on | Limited capacity

After passing the theory exam, you can register and attend the in-person clinical component. You will get hands-on practice with separators banding, bonding, radiology, digital scanners, photography and archwires.

Pricing and details

Exams

Exams are held at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ on the first Monday of each month. You can also arrange another testing centre, such as other universities, colleges, libraries or schools. The exam must be completed a minimum of three weeks before attending the in-person clinical component, and once you pass, you have one year to enroll in the clinical portion.

Class format

In-person dates are held in Edmonton, at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, and run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MST.

The online content is available online via our eClass platform and is in a self-paced, self-study format (no in-person attendance required).

Online materials are accessible for one year.

Prerequisites

  • Active practicing RDH or RDA license from your regulatory authority
RDAs must be level two to participate in the module. Previous orthodontic experience is not required, and you do not have to be currently employed.

Our leading faculty

Dr. Manuel Oscar Lagravère Vich
Director, orthodontic graduate program

Dr. Lagravère, DDS, MSc, PhD, was born in Lima, Peru, where he completed his degree in dental science (2000) and masters in science (2003) at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.

After this, he moved to Edmonton to pursue a PhD in orthodontic which was completed in July 2009 in the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Since then, Lagravère has moved in the faculty ranks being promoted to tenured-professor in orthodontics since July 2023 where he is involved in teaching orthodontics to undergraduates and postgraduates students.

During his time in teaching and doing research, Lagravère has won several awards and has published over 160 papers in important scientific journals. In July 2025, he will become the director of the orthodontic graduate program at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
