MN admission Criteria and Application Requirements
An undergraduate degree in Nursing, usually 4 years in duration, with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, or an equivalent institution.
The admission GPA will be calculated based on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.
One undergraduate course in statistics and one in research methods with a final grade of B or higher in each, preferably completed within the past 6 years.
Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be required to complete an undergraduate statistics and/or research course prior to beginning the MN program or complete a statistics refresher course.
MN applicants who desire to become eligible for entry-to-practice as a nurse practitioner require 4,500 hours of registered nursing practice, appropriate to the program category prior to entering the program, i.e.,
- Adult RNs who have worked with adult populations
- Neonatal RNs who have worked in at least level III or higher NICU environments
- Family/All Ages RNs who have worked with adults and children across some diversity of settings
Students will be tested on physical assessment skills at the beginning of NURS 516 (Adult/FAA) or NURS 518 (Neonate).
Note: International applicants who do not have RN registration and clinical work experience in Canada cannot be admitted to the advanced clinical (NP) focus.
All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency prior to admission, either by possession of a degree from an academic institution recognized by the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, where the language of instruction is English, or a satisfactory score on an approved English language examination within the last 2 years as described below:
- TOEFL: Overall score of at least 587 (paper-based), or a total score of 97 with a score of at least 22 on each of the individual skill areas (Internet-based);
- IELTS: Overall score of 7.0 with the following minimum scores: Listening-7, Reading-6.5, Writing-6.5, Speaking-7.0;
- Duolingo: Overall score of 130 with no subscore below 120
Note: Graduate programs reserve the right to require a further demonstration of English language proficiency. The Faculty of Nursing may require applicants to successfully complete EAP 500. Applicants who currently hold RN licensure with CRNA or another Canadian nursing regulatory body may be exempt from ELP requirements.

Application Documents Required:
- A completed for graduate admission.
- You must declare your entire academic education from all past and present universities. upload complete academic documents for each program listed as per Document Preparation
- Current CV
- Three letters of reference (two from an academic setting and one from a nursing practice setting).
- For thesis applicants, one reference letter must be from your proposed supervisor or co-supervisors, and within the letter, confirm their agreement to supervise.
- If possible, students seeking admission to the program in a specific advanced practice specialty area should provide a letter of support regarding their clinical expertise in that specialty area.

When considering an application to the thesis-based Master of Nursing program, it is the responsibility of the applicant to connect with a faculty member who could appropriately supervise the thesis project that you intend to develop.
The role of the graduate supervisor is to provide guidance and direction in the selection of the thesis topic and research method. Thus, the graduate supervisor must have the expertise required to support the intended research project.
Thesis applicants must confirm the name of the faculty member who has agreed to serve as their graduate supervisor prior to application assessment.
Application Review Process
An application will not be considered until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and the application has been submitted.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure the completeness of their applications by planning ahead to make certain that all documents will be uploaded to the online application by the deadline.
Each application is reviewed based on:- GPA in the final two years of the baccalaureate nursing program (or most recent 60 credits)
- Grades in undergraduate research and statistics courses
- Grades in any graduate courses
- References
- Nursing work experience
- Expectations about the MN program
- Career goals
A recommendation is made by the Faculty of Nursing Graduate Admissions Committee to the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Nursing, who, in turn, makes a recommendation to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS).
GPS makes the final decision to accept or decline a student’s application.
Note: Although the program has minimum requirements, competition for places is high, and meeting the minimum standard does not guarantee admission.
Important Information for students admitted to the MN program
The official admission letter for successful applicants is posted directly on the student's application.
All offers of admission are conditional (with the exception of students who have only completed previous education at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥). As noted in the official admission letter, official documents (transcripts, degree certificates, etc.) are required by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). Documents must be sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the GPS Office.
Prior to beginning a Nursing graduate program, students must complete the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥'s Indigenous Canada Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Prior to attending the first course of the program, a copy of the course certificate should be submitted to the Nursing graduate office (further details provided on this webpage: Faculty of Nursing Graduate Programs and Admissions).
