Program Overview (Summer)
Surgery Camp will be a 5-day training and educational program designed to introduce students interested in surgery to the diverse facets of surgical science through a simulation-based approach. Each day unfolds with a focus on different topics of surgery, offering a comprehensive understanding of this dynamic field:
Day 1: Understanding Patient Assessment
Explore the process of patient assessment and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) commonly used in medical education. Engage in interactive sessions and simulations to gain insights into the initial stages of surgical care and the importance of effective communication skills.
Day 2: Operating Room and Aseptic Technique
Dive into hands-on training in basic surgical techniques. Under the guidance of surgical and medical experts, practice suturing, knot tying, and other fundamental skills required in surgical procedures. This interactive session will help develop a basic understanding of surgical techniques. Ending the day with a one-on-one meet and greet with one of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s very own surgeons!
Day 3: Basic Surgical Techniques
The day kicks off with an engaging lecture on basic suture techniques, followed by an interactive hands-on workshop where participants master essential surgical skills. To top it off, the day will close with an informative lecture on MCAT preparation offering invaluable tips and strategies, helping aspiring medical students gear up for success!
Day 4: Hands-On Workshops
The day is packed with exciting hands-on sessions, where participants dive into essential surgical procedures like disinfection of the surgical site, wound care, and vital assessments. They also explore the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for surgeons and have the unique opportunity to meet and engage with a practicing surgeon, gaining invaluable insights into the world of medical practice! It’s an action-packed, interactive experience that brings crucial skills to life!
Day 5:
The final day is filled with inspiring presentations from distinguished scientists and clinicians at the Department of Surgery, offering exciting insights into the latest breakthroughs in the field. Student groups will present their research, ending with an awards and closing ceremony that celebrates their incredible contributions and achievements!

- Fee: $550 per person with the limited possibility for a fee waiver for low income and Indigenous students
