About the Division
Pediatricians from the Department of Pediatrics and ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Health Services has collaborated and have helped create the only sub-specialized Pediatric Emergency Department in Central and Northern ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Its staff and physicians work with other healthcare providers and hospitals throughout the region to provide an integrated network of pediatric emergency care. The Stollery Children's Hospital's Pediatric Emergency Department treats just over 27,000 children per year (approximately 70 patients per day). Fifteen percent of these children require admission to hospital.
Our division engages in knowledge exchange and training with healthcare professionals across ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥:
- Medical students and residents receive on-the-job training in the art and science of managing children and families who require urgent and emergent treatment.
- We offer a fully accredited Royal College sub-specialty training program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine for residents from General Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine.
- We provide weekly Grand Rounds presentations made by local experts and external guest speakers, in order to keep abreast of new and innovative emergency treatments.
- Our staff physicians and residents are actively involved in teaching and certifying health professionals in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
- Our research program involves both tertiary care and community outreach, to better the care of all acutely ill and injured children in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
- Telehealth technologies allow pediatric emergency specialists to assist smaller, more remote centres by helping assess their parents' needs. Telehealth is the use of communication equipment to link healthcare providers and patients in different locations. With Telehealth, you can see, hear and talk to a healthcare provider without travelling to where they are.
- RAAPID technology - Physician and healthcare provider access to the Referral, Access, Advice, Placement, Information & Destination (RAAPID). RAAPID is a call centre designed to provide a single point of contact for physicians and healthcare providers to access appropriate and timely advice, referral, admission, discharge, repatriation and transportation for their patients.
