Division of Infectious Diseases

Infectious Disease specialists diagnose and treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. They care for a broad range of patients, including those in medical, surgical, and critical care settings.

Clinical and Regional Impact

  • Provides inpatient and outpatient clinical services across all acute care facilities in Edmonton.
  • Offers consultative services to Northern ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and the western Northwest Territories.
  • Supports regional and provincial programs in:
    • Infection prevention and control
    • Antimicrobial stewardship
    • Workplace health and safety
  • Maintains strong collaborations with:
    • Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories
    • Regional public health officials

History and Growth

  • Founded in 1967 by Dr. George Goldsand, one of Canada’s first three Infectious Diseases specialists.
  • Has grown to over 20 faculty members, with expanded services and academic roles.
  • One of the most respected Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases.
  • Offers a unique fellowship in Transplant Infectious Diseases.
