
Division of Infectious Diseases
Infectious Disease specialists diagnose and treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. They care for a broad range of patients, including those in medical, surgical, and critical care settings.
Clinical and Regional Impact
- Provides inpatient and outpatient clinical services across all acute care facilities in Edmonton.
- Offers consultative services to Northern ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and the western Northwest Territories.
- Supports regional and provincial programs in:
- Infection prevention and control
- Antimicrobial stewardship
- Workplace health and safety
- Maintains strong collaborations with:
- Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories
- Regional public health officials
History and Growth
- Founded in 1967 by Dr. George Goldsand, one of Canada’s first three Infectious Diseases specialists.
- Has grown to over 20 faculty members, with expanded services and academic roles.
- One of the most respected Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases.
- Offers a unique fellowship in Transplant Infectious Diseases.
