Margaret McNeely
Dr. McNeely is principal investigator of the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥-wide ACE study and Director of the Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic. Her research involves exercise-based rehabilitation for individuals with cancer.
What drew you to your field of research?
I worked clinically at the Cross Cancer Institute as a physical therapist for many years. We knew our work was making a difference to those with cancer; however, at the time, there was little research evidence supporting the benefit of oncology rehabilitation.
What are your ongoing research projects?
We have a number of research projects in the Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic involving exercise-based rehabilitation for individuals with cancer. Some studies involve specific cancer groups such multiple myeloma and prostate cancer, while others are open to all cancer types.
As my research focuses on impairments related to cancer and cancer treatment (e.g., fatigue, incontinence, peripheral neuropathy), my research studies include a physiotherapy component along with exercise for fitness.
What research challenges are you facing?
Since COVID-19, we have found recruitment of individuals to our trials much more difficult.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I am a two time medalist in the World Masters Games for racewalking.
How has CRINA helped support your work?
CRINA has supported my work in a number of ways. I have received support from CRINA for summer and graduate studentships, which has allowed me to attract students to my research clinic. We also received grant funding for a series of projects in the area of pediatric oncology.
