MBA/MScURP Combined Degree
The combined MBA / MScURP program offers students the opportunity to earn both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning in just three years. This program is designed for real estate oriented MBA students or planning students who recognize the value of combining urban and regional planning skills with management skills, and knowledge of real estate economics and finance.
Program Structure
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the Faculty of Business offer a program of combined study which permits highly qualified students to earn both the MSc in Urban and Regional Planning and the MBA degrees after three years of full-time study.
This three-year combined degree program begins with the first year taken entirely within the MBA program and the second year in the MSc in Urban and Regional Planning Program with two Business electives. These can be reversed for students who start in the MSc in Urban and Regional Planning program. The third year is then split between the two programs. Students in the combined program are required to complete a minimum of 87 units, including a 3 unit exercise in Business and a 6 units capping exercise in Planning.
Each student must first be admitted to either the MBA program in the Faculty of Business or the MSc in Urban and Regional Planning (two-year stream) in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. After completing the first year of the program, students are eligible to apply to the combined MBA/MSc in Urban and Regional Planning program.
To apply for the combined MBA/MScURP degree, students apply directly, via email, to the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ School of Business Master’s and Executive Education Office. There is no application fee. The entrance requirements for the combined program are different than the standard admission requirements to the MBA program. To apply, students would need to submit:
- A completed application form
- A resume outlining professional and volunteer experience
- Transcript of completed undergraduate degree and any in-progress academic transcripts, if applicable
Once you have these items complete, please email them directly (from your U¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ email address) to mbaadm@ualberta.ca.
After submitting your application, a member of our admissions team will conduct a first review. Qualified applicants will then be sent a request to complete our initial interview. The initial interview is a video interview via Kira Talent that includes four verbal response questions and one written response question. After completing the initial interview, successful candidates will be invited to complete a second and final interview, in-person, with a member of the Admissions Committee.
During the MBA year, students are assessed MBA tuition. Tuition is assessed on a per course basis. Domestic student tuition for 2024/25 for a 3-credit MBA course is currently ~$2,597.64*. The cost to complete the entire MBA portion of this combined degree is approximately $41,600 plus non-instructional fees.
Combined degree students are eligible for scholarships and awards in the MBA program during their MBA year.
