Shanika Werellagama's scientific journey began in Sri Lanka, where her undergraduate studies provided a sound grounding in molecular and cellular biology, honed through hands-on training in diverse techniques. This practical experience sharpened her technical skills and cultivated her ability to understand and implement intricate experimental designs.

While pursuing her master's degree in Japan, Shanika's growth extended beyond the bench. She took on mentorship roles, guiding high school interns and new lab members. Simultaneously, she proactively sought opportunities to deepen her laboratory expertise through internships at prestigious pharmaceutical companies. These experiences involved contributing to laboratory analyses and developing valuable teamwork abilities. Her time in Japan also underscored the significance of patience, clear communication, mutual respect, and flexibility as essential elements of effective leadership in cross-cultural settings.

Throughout her academic path, Shanika consistently embraced opportunities to lead through mentorship and knowledge sharing. Now, continuing her academic journey here at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, Department of Surgery, she is further developing her leadership skills under the mentorship of her current supervisor, whom she deeply admires as a leadership role model. Inspired by this guidance, Shanika is committed to emulating her supervisor's approach by creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for those around her.

Reflecting on her experiences, Shanika finds profound meaning in Simon Sinek's quote: "Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge." This philosophy has been a guiding principle in her teaching and lab interactions. This year, Shanika is eager to leverage her mentoring experience to support summer students and contribute to the department's culture of collaborative growth.

Shanika leads through support and encouragement. While pursuing her master’s degree in Japan, she mentored high school interns and new lab members. Here Shanika learned the significance of patience, clear communication, mutual respect, and flexibility as essential elements of effective leadership in cross-cultural settings. Inspired by the mentorship of her ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ supervisor and role model Dr. Babita Agrawal, Shanika is committed to emulating her supervisor's approach by creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for those around her.
