Thanks to his prolific number of publications and the outstanding quality of that work, in 2024 placed in the top 0.05 per cent of scholars from more than 200 countries. Specifically, he was ranked No. 14 in cyclooxygenase research and 44 in the area of medicinal chemistry.
After completing his education at the University of Saskatchewan — including a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry — and two postdoctoral fellowships, at Texas A&M and the University of British Columbia, Knaus began his career here at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ in 1972. He achieved the rank of full professor in 1980 and during his tenure was both a Killam professor and a McCalla professor, supervising more than 100 learners at various levels in their research journey.
Throughout his career Knaus has received multiple awards recognizing both his teaching and his research, and today he is a professor emeritus in our faculty whose work continues to have a significant impact in the field of drug design. His current research — much of it in collaboration with other College of Health Sciences members — focuses on the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel next-generation types of heterocyclic molecules to treat arthritic disease, obesity, or as potential radiopharmaceuticals to diagnose the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
