Community Service Learning

In addition to the blended learning experiences, each student in the capstone course, NS 430 (NS 550 - graduate level) volunteers 20 hours (30 hours - graduate level) to complete an Indigenous governance related project for Indigenous-related organizations, communities, and/or departments. We run this in partnership with Community Service Learning (CSL). CSL is also interested in how we can integrate service learning in a blended learning classroom environment.

Completed Community-based Research Projects

Métis Nation of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (2016/2017)

The goal of this project was to provide the Métis Nation of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ with a review and resulting recommendations in transitioning their governance structure and processes from bylaws towards a model that fits their needs in the twenty-first century, for example, through a constitutional framework. We held focus group sessions with MNA community members at their six regions in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ providing feedback on Métis Governance topics, such as consultation processes, program and service delivery, community engagement, and decision making. This was also supplemented with leadership interviews and led by a governance advisory circle.

Metis Settlements General Council (2016 Strategic Summit)

Facilitated workshops with 120 Elders and youth from the eight Métis settlements to engage membership and contribute to the strategic direction of Métis settlements.
