UKE at rogers place!

On March 10, 2025, The Kule Folklore Centre at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ hosted the Canadian premiere of the acclaimed documentary “UKE: The Untold Story of Hockey Legends” by Ukrainian Emmy award-winning filmmaker Volodymyr Mula.

“UKE” delves into the captivating yet often overlooked stories of over 50 NHL champions of Ukrainian descent. Through gripping interviews and rare archival footage, the documentary showcases the legacy of iconic players such as Wayne Gretzky, Johnny Bucyk, Ken Daneyko, and Ruslan Fedotenko. It also features personal insights from Walter Gretzky, Canada’s beloved “hockey dad,” and Jerry Sawchuk, son of legendary goalie Terry (Taras) Sawchuk.

About the documentary:

Directed by Volodymyr Mula, “UKE” delves into the captivating yet often overlooked stories of over 50 NHL champions of Ukrainian descent. Through gripping interviews and rare archival footage, the documentary showcases the legacy of iconic players such as Wayne Gretzky, Johnny Bucyk, Ken Daneyko, and Ruslan Fedotenko. It also features personal insights from Walter Gretzky, Canada’s beloved “hockey dad,” and Jerry Sawchuk, son of legendary goalie Terry (Taras) Sawchuk.

In a statement about the film, Volodymyr Mula shared:
Our task was a challenging one: months of research in international archives, interviews with hockey stars across North America, and expeditions through the freezing Canadian prairies. Thanks to the support of hundreds of passionate individuals, we were able to bring this project to life. I invite everyone to watch the film and be inspired by this shared history.

The screening will be followed by an engaging Q&A session, providing audiences with the rare opportunity to interact with the director and several legendary figures featured in the film.
Additionally, attendees will enjoy a delicious Ukrainian-style meal, further immersing them in Ukrainian-Canadian culture.

About Volodymyr Mula:

Volodymyr Mula is a film director, producer, sports journalist, Sports Emmy® Winner, and Honored Art Worker of Ukraine.

He has collaborated with leading television networks throughout his professional career, including the British BBC, American CBS, and Singaporean CNA. He has also covered major events such as the Eurovision Song Contest for seven years (2011-2017), the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the 2016 European Football Championship in France, and the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Mula is well-known for his documentary works, including Amazon Prime's "American Dream: In Search of the Truth" (2017) and "UKE" (2020). In 2021, he filmed a documentary titled "The Football Nation" about Ukraine's first soccer team.

Mula worked as a director and field producer on the Sports Emmy® Awards-winning television series 'Football Must Go On' (2023) for Paramount+/CBS, as well as on 'We're The Zoomers' (2023) for the CNA television network.

In 2024, he wrote the book "Wayne Called Me" about the history of creating the "UKE" documentary movie.

About Kelly Hrudey:

Kelly Hrudey, a renowned former NHL goaltender and respected broadcaster, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He was best known for his career as a goaltender with the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks. Hrudey transitioned to broadcasting and became a household name as a studio analyst for Hockey Night in Canada on Sportsnet. Throughout his career, Hrudey has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and has contributed significantly to hockey communities across Canada.

Петра і Дорис Кулів при Університеті Альберти у співпраці з Hockey ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Foundation має приємність запросити вас на канадську прем’єру документального фільму «Юкі: Історії перемог вільних українців» від українського режисера, лауреата премії «Еммі», Володимира Мули.

Подія відбудеться 10 березня 2025 року у Форд Холлі, на стадіоні Роджерс-Плейс у Едмонтоні, і обіцяє стати незабутнім вечором, який поєднає багатство української спадщини з історією хокею.

Про фільм:

Документальний фільм «Юкі» розповідає про маловідомі захопливі історії понад 50 чемпіонів НХЛ українського походження. У стрічці використовуються рідкісні архівні кадри та інтерв’ю з легендами, зокрема Вейном Грецкі, Джонні Буциком, Кеном Данейко та Русланом Федотенком. Також представлено особисті розповіді Волтера Грецкі, улюбленого канадського «батька хокею», та Джеррі Савчука, сина легендарного воротаря Террі (Тараса) Савчука.

«Ми хотіли зробити не кіно про хокей – він лише один з елементів. Головне, що об’єднує історії всіх наших героїв в одну – це те, що в кінці вони скажуть, що пишаються бути українцями».

Після показу глядачі матимуть рідкісну можливість поспілкуватися з режисером та хокейними легендами, представленими у фільмі, під час інтерактивної сесії запитань і відповідей.

Додатково всі учасники зможуть насолодитися смачною українською вечерею, що дозволить глибше зануритися в культуру українців Канади.
