Commuter Challenge Bike Tune-Up

Wednesday, May 28 | 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Main Quad

Get a free DIY bike tune-up by the 's knowledgeable volunteers – just in time for Environment Week next week. Attendees of this event can also receive a free pastry at the Environment Week Kickoff.

Employees can visit the Energy + Climate Action team to learn more and register for the Commuter Challenge taking place during Environment Week.

Come learn more about the events taking place during Environment Week and to celebrate our campus community's environmental accomplishments.

Bring your own mug for some free Fair Trade coffee and tea! Plus, get a free pastry if you participated in the Commuter Challenge Bike Tune-Up the week prior.

Commuter Challenge

All week June 2–6 | Register your team by May 30 | Employees only

For one week, take the challenge to commute to and from campus using a mode of transportation with fewer emissions, such as biking, walking, rollerblading, public transit or carpooling. In addition to reducing your carbon footprint, your commute becomes dual purpose: read a book on the train, do some cardio on a bike or socialize while carpooling.

The teams with the highest number of sustainable trips and highest percentage of sustainable trips will win a catered lunch for their office. You can also compete to be your team’s MVP.

In the event of a tie, points will be awarded for each trip based on the mode of transportation.

Campus Sustainability Grants Mixer

Join us in recognizing recipients of the Campus Sustainability Grants. Learn about their innovative projects that use Campus as a Living Lab + connect with sustainability-minded colleagues from all corners of our campus community.


Green Labs Network Launch

Wednesday, June 4 | 3-5 p.m. | Cascade Room, Students' Union Building (SUB)

You're invited to the launch of the Green Labs Network, a community of researchers, laboratory professionals, students and other interested parties who are working to reduce the environmental impact of the university’s lab spaces. 

Learn about the programs available on campus and share your perspectives and priorities for Green Labs. Whether you have no experience with green labs or have knowledge that you want to share, we want to hear from you!

Refreshments will be provided. This event is open to everyone.


Freecycle Your Labware

Thursday, June 5 | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. | Katz Group Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research, Level 1 Atrium

Come celebrate the tenth Freecycle Your Labware event! Over nine events we’ve swapped two tonnes of lab materials, saving money and keeping waste out of landfills. Visit us in the Katz atrium to grab some free supplies for your lab! Donating items is not a participation requirement, but we highly encourage you to both donate and take items from this event in the spirit of a fair exchange. A box will be also on site for disposing of pens and ink cartridges.

Register to donate your unused or reusable lab supplies by May 29.


ECHA Green Building Tour

Have you ever wondered how the university reduces its emissions each year, despite an increasing campus population? It’s possible thanks to the high-performance buildings on campus! Take an exciting walking tour of ECHA where you’ll discover cutting-edge green technologies and design features that reduce the building’s ecological impact. Learn how the U of A manages its environmental responsibility through climate resilient strategies, energy efficient design and green building certifications.
