English Language School student profile: Amani Kouadio Fulgence
24 April 2025
My name is Amani Kouadio Fulgence. Originally from Côte d'Ivoire in West Africa, I am passionate about civil engineering, sustainable construction and construction estimating. My native country, rich in cultural diversity, has forged in me a strong identity with values of perseverance, resilience and rigour. Raised in a French-speaking environment, my academic career quickly gravitated toward science and engineering, where I have developed a deep devotion and expertise over the years. As a graduate in civil engineering and a Certified Construction Estimator, my ambition has always been to contribute to the development of construction science and help to develop innovative solutions to the sector.
In 2022, a new adventure began for me and my family when my wife and I decided to move to Canada with our daughters. This transition, while full of promise, has not been without its challenges. Immersion in a new social and linguistic environment, with a harsh climate and a different professional culture, required exceptional adaptability and resilience from me and my family. My main goal was clear: to pursue my studies in civil engineering and construction science at the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ to broaden my skills and gain academic recognition in North America.
One of the major challenges I encountered upon arriving in Canada was the language barrier. As a Francophone in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, it was imperative for me to improve my academic and professional English to succeed in my studies and professional integration. With that in mind, I was honoured to be accepted into the English Language School in the U of A Faculty of Education, where I enthusiastically completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP 550) program.
The EAP 550 program was an enriching experience at many levels. First, it allowed me to refine my language skills, particularly in written and oral comprehension, academic writing and professional communication. The courses not only helped me structure my ideas clearly and coherently in English, but also helped me develop the critical thinking skills needed to meet Canadian academic requirements. Through a variety of activities such as practical exercises and class discussions, I was able to overcome my apprehensions and gain confidence in my interactions in English.
Secondly, throughout this program, I improved my public speaking skills in the presentation of scientific work and gained insight into research methodology. Furthermore, this enriching language program also provided me with an opportunity for personal growth. It allowed me to meet students from diverse linguistic, cultural and geographical backgrounds sharing similar ambitions and challenges. These intercultural exchanges strengthened my adaptability and opened me up to new perspectives, both academically and professionally.
Today, I can see the immense positive impact this training has had on my career. Not only have I significantly improved my English, but I have also acquired a work methodology that will serve me throughout my career. My ambition remains unchanged: to continue my studies and actively contribute to the field of civil engineering in Canada. My commitment to lifelong learning and my desire for excellence drive me to always aim higher.
The story of my integration in Canada is one of challenges met with perseverance and determination. Each obstacle overcome has been a valuable lesson that has reinforced my belief that hard work and resilience are the keys to success. With the support of my family, the academic guidance of the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and my personal commitment, I am more ready than ever to achieve my highest goals.
